Sec. 59-1 of the North Port Code of the City prohibits excessive growth of sodded or seeded grass areas in excess of 12 inches in height on an improved or developed lot. Code Enforcement (941-429-7186) issues compliance notices and can mow the lot at the owner's expense with cost recorded as a lien.
Chapter 59 (Property Standards) sets the 12-inch grass limit on improved property. Owners must also prevent impinging growth onto sidewalks, City rights-of-way, and streets, with the exception that tree branches at least 8 feet above sidewalks or 14 feet above the travelled street are permitted with authorization. Code Enforcement gives written notice and an opportunity to cure; if the owner doesn't comply, the City can contract abatement and lien the property under F.S. §162.09 and Sec. 42-24.
Code Enforcement issues notices then can escalate to the special master with fines up to $250-$500/day. Abatement contractor costs are billed to the owner; unpaid bills become liens.
