Sugar Land requires grass and vegetation to be maintained at 9 inches or less on all portions of the property, including front, back, sides, right-of-way areas, and drainage channels. This is one of the most commonly enforced code violations in the city.
Under Sugar Land's Code of Ordinances, grass and vegetation must be maintained at 9 inches or less on every portion of the property β front yard, backyard, side yards, the right-of-way strip between the sidewalk and curb, and any drainage channels that cross the property. This is one of Sugar Land's most actively enforced property maintenance standards. Code Enforcement conducts both proactive patrols and responds to complaints. When a violation is identified, the city issues a notice to the property owner with a deadline to mow. If the owner fails to comply, the city may abate the nuisance by mowing the property and placing a lien for the cost. Sugar Land's warm, humid climate means grass can exceed the 9-inch limit quickly during the growing season (March through November). The city also enforces the International Property Maintenance Code (IPMC) for general property upkeep.
First offense: notice to comply within a specified deadline. Failure to abate: fine up to $2,000 per offense, and the city may mow the property and lien the costs. Each day of continued violation is a separate offense. Repeat violators may face accelerated enforcement.
