Wichita, KS Landscaping Rules: Grass Height Limits (2026)

Under Wichita Municipal Code Chapter 7.16 (Weeds and Grass), it is unlawful for any property owner or occupant to allow grass, weeds, or other rank vegetation to exceed 12 inches in height on any improved property within city limits. Vacant lots and unimproved properties are subject to the same standard if abutting developed areas. Code Enforcement (part of the Department of Metropolitan Area Building and Construction Department) inspects properties in response to complaints and during proactive sweeps. When a violation is observed, the owner receives written notice and is typically given 10 days to abate the violation by mowing. If the owner fails to comply, the city may enter the property, mow the vegetation, and assess all costs (including administrative fees) as a special assessment lien on the property tax bill. Repeat offenders may receive shorter abatement windows or pre-authorized seasonal abatement. Native plant gardens, ornamental tall grasses, and registered pollinator habitats may qualify for exemption with proper documentation and visible borders showing intentional landscaping. Drought conditions do not exempt property owners; brown grass under 12 inches is acceptable. Stormwater drainage areas, roadside ditches, and creek banks have additional rules under the Public Works Department.
