The City of Yakima adopted the 2018 International Property Maintenance Code under YMC Chapter 11.40, which requires premises and exterior property to be maintained free from hazardous vegetation in excess of 12 inches in height. The rule is enforced by the City's Office of Code Administration.
Yakima Municipal Code Chapter 11.40 incorporates the 2018 International Property Maintenance Code (IPMC) by reference with local amendments. Under that adopted code, premises and exterior property shall be maintained free from hazardous vegetation in excess of 12 inches in height. 'Hazardous vegetation' is defined as vegetation that is dry and combustible exceeding 12 inches in height which may cause a fire hazard to the immediate and surrounding areas, and can include trees, shrubs, grass, weeds, bushes, vines and other plant materials, including clippings, fallen leaves or branches. The 12-inch limit applies citywide to all owners and occupants of property. Code Compliance is housed in the Offices of Code Administration at 129 N. 2nd Street. Note that within unincorporated Yakima County (not the City), the County Code Enforcement Division applies its own 12-inch hazardous-vegetation standard.
Code Compliance issues a notice of violation with a deadline to abate. If the property is not brought into compliance, the City may abate the nuisance and assess the cost as a lien against the property. Continuing violations may be referred for civil infraction or municipal court action under the property maintenance code.
