Cambridge has one of the strictest tree ordinances in MA. Under the 2021 Tree Protection Ordinance, major trimming of any tree 6 inches DBH or larger requires a permit from the city arborist.
The Cambridge Tree Protection Ordinance, strengthened in 2021, protects all trees of at least 6 inches diameter at breast height (DBH) on both public and most private property. While routine pruning for health or minor shaping does not require a permit, substantial canopy reduction, topping, or work that affects the viability of a protected tree requires approval from the Cambridge Department of Public Works city arborist. Street trees in the public right-of-way cannot be trimmed by residents at all and must be referred to the DPW forestry division at 617-349-4793. Utility line clearance is handled under separate agreements with Eversource and the city. Violations can carry fines of up to 300 dollars per day per tree, and improperly trimmed trees may be assessed replacement value fees based on appraised canopy loss.
