Tarrant County has no generator noise ordinance. Standby and portable generators may run without time limits. TX Penal Code 42.01 is the only backstop for extreme persistent noise.
Standby generators, including whole-home natural gas units and portable gasoline generators, are not regulated for noise at the county level. Installation of permanent standby generators at commercial facilities may involve mechanical, electrical, and gas code review under adopted International Codes, but residential installations in unincorporated Tarrant County do not require county building permits. The county does not impose setbacks from property lines, enclosure requirements, or nighttime run restrictions. After winter storm events and summer grid strain the county often sees widespread generator use, and the state has taken a permissive stance on backup power since the February 2021 storm. TX Penal Code 42.01 disorderly conduct applies if noise exceeds 85 dB after warning. Inside cities, municipal codes sometimes require sound-attenuated enclosures and setbacks.
