LAMC Section 112.05 limits powered equipment to 75 dB(A) at 50 feet. Section 116.01 prohibits operating machinery creating loud noise in residential zones between 10 PM and 7 AM. Emergency generator use during power outages is generally permitted but must still minimize disturbance.
Los Angeles regulates generator noise through several LAMC provisions. Section 112.05 establishes that powered equipment and powered hand tools shall not produce noise levels exceeding 75 dB(A) at a distance of 50 feet. This applies to portable generators used for construction, events, and residential purposes. Section 116.01 broadly prohibits the operation of any machinery, equipment, or mechanical device that creates loud, raucous, or impulsive sound within any residential zone or within 500 feet of a residence between 10:00 PM and 7:00 AM. Emergency generator use during power outages is generally tolerated, but operators should still minimize noise impact. Permanent standby generators require building permits, electrical permits, and must comply with zoning setback requirements. They are also subject to LAMC 112.02 if they produce noise exceeding the ambient level by more than 5 dB on neighboring property. Film production generators are regulated under separate filming permit conditions and often require sound-attenuating enclosures. The LAPD Noise Enforcement Team handles generator noise complaints at 213-996-1250.
Violations of Section 112.05 (exceeding 75 dB at 50 feet) and Section 116.01 (nighttime operation) are misdemeanors. Fines apply per occurrence. Stop-work orders may be issued for construction generators exceeding limits. Unpermitted permanent generators face building code violations.
