Outdoor music in unincorporated Boulder County must stay within the 55 dB(A) daytime / 50 dB(A) nighttime residential caps, measured 10 feet from the property line. Government-permitted concerts, festivals, and special-use events are exempt.
Outdoor amplified music is a non-vehicular sound source under Ordinance No. 92-28, so it is measured 10 feet from the property line against the 55/50 dB(A) residential limits (Sec 1.01.050(C)). Impulsive or shrill sound becomes unlawful at 5 dB(A) below those caps. Two exemptions matter for events: Sec 1.01.060(C) exempts state- or government-sponsored "cultural, entertainment, athletic, or patriotic events, including... concerts, music festivals, and fireworks displays," and Sec 1.01.060(K) exempts activities under a county special-use permit unless the permit's terms address noise. A backyard party has no such exemption and must meet the residential caps.
Outdoor music over the residential limit is a Class 2 Petty Offense: $30 per violation, up to $300 for repeats within one year, plus court costs.
