Outdoor and amplified music in unincorporated Calaveras County is governed by Section 9.02.050, which prohibits loudspeakers, stereos, and instruments that create a noise disturbance, and bars loudspeaker/PA sound across a residential property line from 10 p.m. to 8 a.m. County-approved events are exempt.
Outdoor music in the unincorporated county falls under the same Specific Noise Regulations as amplified music. Section 9.02.050 of the Calaveras County Code prohibits playing any radio, loudspeaker, stereo, drum, musical instrument, or similar amplifying device so as to create a noise disturbance for anyone other than the operator, and specifically prohibits loudspeaker or public-address sound across a residential real property line between 10:00 p.m. and 8:00 a.m. Noise from a party during those same hours that violates the Section 9.02.030 dBA standard is also prohibited. Importantly, Section 9.02.060 exempts certain organized outdoor events: sound from school athletic and entertainment events, church bells and chimes during a religious service, and any county-sponsored or county-approved event or celebration are exempt from the ordinance. Larger gatherings such as concerts and festivals may also be addressed through conditions in a discretionary land-use permit rather than the noise ordinance alone. The General Plan envisions setting maximum amplification levels for special events through the permit process. All of these provisions apply only to the unincorporated county, not the City of Angels Camp.
Outdoor music that creates a noise disturbance and is not exempt can be cited under Chapter 9.02 (infraction, then misdemeanor on repeat) and abated as a public nuisance under Chapter 8.06.
