Murfreesboro treats a car sound system audible 50 feet from the vehicle as prima facie evidence of a violation, and requires every vehicle to run a working muffler with no cutout or bypass. Statewide, T.C.A. governs modified exhaust.
Murfreesboro City Code sec. 21-106(G) prohibits operating a sound amplification device in a motor vehicle on public or private property so as to create a noise disturbance; audibility 50 feet from the vehicle is prima facie evidence of a violation. Every vehicle must have a muffler or sound-dissipative device in good working order, and exhaust cutouts or bypasses are banned. Trucks over 10,000 lbs GCWR may not idle over ten minutes in a residential zone between 10 PM and 7 AM. Vehicles also must meet Table 6 pass-by limits (for example 76 dBA for cars up to 35 mph). These rules apply on city streets; enforcement in the unincorporated county falls to the Sheriff under state law.
Cited under City Code sec. 1-8; an affirmative defense exists if the device was inside an enclosed vehicle and not audible outside. Enforced by Murfreesboro Police.
