Tucson Fire Department enforces the International Fire Code with local amendments. Per Tucson's BBQ and Open Flame Devices handout, 20-lb propane cylinders may not be stored within dwelling units or on balconies unless shaded and at least 5 feet from any building opening or vent. IFC 308.1.4 prohibits open-flame and charcoal cooking on combustible balconies within 10 feet of multi-family buildings.
Tucson Fire Department adopts the International Fire Code through Tucson Code Chapter 14, with local amendments. IFC 308.1.4 prohibits charcoal burners and open-flame cooking devices on combustible balconies or within 10 feet of combustible construction in buildings with three or more dwelling units. Exceptions apply where buildings or balconies are protected by an NFPA 13 or 13R automatic sprinkler system, or for LP-gas devices with containers of 2.5 lb water capacity or less. Tucson Fire's published guidance specifically addresses 20-lb propane (BBQ) cylinders: they may not be stored within dwelling units, and outdoor storage on balconies requires shade and a minimum 5-foot clearance from any building opening or vent. Single-family detached residences are not restricted by IFC 308.1.4. Arizona Revised Statutes 33-1819 protects single-family use of propane gas grills from HOA prohibitions but allows reasonable HOA placement and clearance rules.
Tucson Fire Code violations are civil infractions enforced by Tucson Fire Marshal and may carry penalties under Tucson Code Chapter 14 and Chapter 8. Multi-family lease violations may trigger eviction. Fire-caused damage creates personal civil liability and may void renters' insurance.
