Washington County Sheriff's Office tags and tows abandoned vehicles on public rights-of-way under ORS 819.110 and county Chapter 8.16. A vehicle on public street for 24+ hours meeting abandonment criteria can be tagged; 24 more hours before tow. On private property, ORS 98.830 applies.
Under ORS 819.110, a vehicle is subject to abandoned-vehicle removal when it is inoperable, unlicensed, or has been left standing for an extended period. The Washington County Sheriff's Office handles abandoned vehicles on public rights-of-way in unincorporated areas. Procedure: deputy tags the vehicle, owner has 24 hours to remove it, then it may be towed to a contracted tow yard. Tow lien attaches for towing and storage costs. The Sheriff does not tow from private property. Private property owners use ORS 98.830: post a notice, notify the registered owner by mail, wait the statutory period, then engage a tow company. Vehicles stored on private property in unincorporated areas must be operable, licensed, and current on tags if visible from the street or in a setback (CDC 413, Chapter 8.16).
Tagged vehicle not moved in 24 hours: towed at owner expense ($200 to $500+ plus daily storage). Repeated abandonment: citation under Chapter 8.16. Private property violations: code compliance notice, municipal abatement possible.
