Middlesex County EV charger installation is governed by the Massachusetts Electrical Code (527 CMR 12.00) which adopts NEC Article 625 for EVSE installation. All chargers require an electrical permit from the local wiring inspector. Cambridge Zoning Ordinance Section 6.108 requires EV-ready parking spaces in new developments. Somerville and Newton have adopted similar stretch code provisions requiring EV infrastructure in new residential and commercial construction. MassDEP and Eversource administer the MassEVIP and ConnectedSolutions rebate programs. Public charging stations on municipal property are installed by DPW or through National Grid partnerships. Tampering with or parking a non-EV in a designated EV charging space is prohibited under local traffic regulations with fines typically 50 to 100 dollars.
