In unincorporated Shelby County no truck, trailer, tractor, or bus over 8,000 pounds may sit on a residential street except during active loading, and Section 24-362 requires a permit to move any vehicle whose width with load exceeds eight feet on a county road.
Oversized vehicles are governed by two provisions of Shelby County Code Chapter 24. Section 24-191(b) bars parking or leaving unattended any truck, truck trailer, tractor, or bus with a declared gross vehicle weight rating over 8,000 pounds on a residential street except while actively loading, unloading, or servicing adjacent property. Section 24-362 provides that no person shall drive or convey through any public road any vehicle whose width, with its load, exceeds eight feet, except under a permit. On private property, Unified Development Code Section 2.7.10.B bars parking trucks or tractor-trailers on residential-zone lots. State-route moves need TDOT oversize permits under T.C.A. Title 55.
Moving an over-width vehicle without a permit violates Section 24-362. An oversized truck or bus on a residential street contrary to Section 24-191(b) may be impounded under Section 24-199. Storing heavy equipment on a residential lot violates UDC 2.7.10.B.
