The City of Turlock addresses oversized vehicles in two ways. For movement on city streets, a Transportation Permit (oversized-load permit) is required for any driver who travels within city limits in a vehicle or with a load exceeding the California Vehicle Code maximum height of 14 feet, width of 8 feet 6 inches, or length of 40 feet (65 feet combined). The city is empowered, but not required, to issue the permit and may impose route and time-of-day restrictions for public safety; the application is modeled on the State of California form under CVC 35781. The permit costs $16, is valid for up to 7 days, and authorizes a single trip. For storage on residential property, Turlock Municipal Code 9-2-114 caps recreational vehicles, boats, and utility trailers at defined sizes (RVs and boats at 40 feet long, 8 feet wide, 13.5 feet tall; utility trailers at 20 feet long); a vehicle exceeding those size limits is expressly deemed not incidental to a dwelling and is not permitted to park in residential areas except as otherwise allowed.
