Turlock requires a Transportation Permit to move any oversized vehicle or load exceeding California Vehicle Code limits through the city. On residential property, RVs and boats over 40 feet are not treated as incidental to a home and are barred from residential parking under city code.
The City of Turlock addresses oversized vehicles in two ways. For movement on city streets, a Transportation Permit (oversized-load permit) is required for any driver who travels within city limits in a vehicle or with a load exceeding the California Vehicle Code maximum height of 14 feet, width of 8 feet 6 inches, or length of 40 feet (65 feet combined). The city is empowered, but not required, to issue the permit and may impose route and time-of-day restrictions for public safety; the application is modeled on the State of California form under CVC 35781. The permit costs $16, is valid for up to 7 days, and authorizes a single trip. For storage on residential property, Turlock Municipal Code 9-2-114 caps recreational vehicles, boats, and utility trailers at defined sizes (RVs and boats at 40 feet long, 8 feet wide, 13.5 feet tall; utility trailers at 20 feet long); a vehicle exceeding those size limits is expressly deemed not incidental to a dwelling and is not permitted to park in residential areas except as otherwise allowed. The state controls the underlying dimensional standards through the Vehicle Code, while Turlock administers the local permit and residential-storage limits.
Moving an oversized vehicle or load through the city without a Transportation Permit violates the city permit requirement; the permit is obtained from the Engineering Division (fax (209) 668-5563), with review up to 48 hours. Oversized RVs/boats stored in residential zones are abated through Code Enforcement, (209) 664-7348.
