Under Clark County Code Title 22, Section 22.02.190, platforms and decks that are 30 inches or less above adjacent grade, accessory to a single-family dwelling, and meeting other conditions are exempt from building permits. Decks exceeding 30 inches above grade require a building permit with structural plans showing footings, framing, and guard rail details. Unlike decks, all patio covers and shade structures require building permits in Clark County — this includes both freestanding and attached structures, carports, and ramadas (shade structures common in desert landscaping). Concrete slab patios poured at grade level generally do not require a building permit. In the Las Vegas Valley's extreme heat, covered patios and shade structures are particularly popular and common additions. Clark County requires these structures to meet wind loading requirements due to the region's occasional high winds. Aluminum patio covers and shade sails are popular materials. Attached patio covers must be engineered to ensure the connection to the primary dwelling does not compromise structural integrity. All electrical work associated with patios and decks (lighting, fans, outlets) requires a separate electrical permit.
