Dallas County, TX Permit Requirements: Fence Permits (2026)

The City of Dallas has relatively permissive fence permitting. Standard residential fences of wood, vinyl, chain-link, or metal under the maximum height limits (9 feet rear, 6 feet side, 4 feet front) generally do not require a building permit. Masonry walls, stone walls, and engineered retaining walls may require building permits depending on height and structural requirements. All fences must comply with SEC. 51A-4.602 of the Dallas Development Code, including sight triangle requirements at intersections (2.5-foot maximum height within the visibility triangle), front yard height limits, and material restrictions (chain-link in front yards must have 2-inch mesh or smaller). Swimming pool barrier fences must meet IRC requirements (48-inch minimum, self-closing/self-latching gates).
