Louisville Metro LMCO Β§156 (Property Maintenance Code) applies to garage sale cleanup. Merchandise and signs must be removed by end of sale. Items left visible from the street trigger blight citations.
Louisville Metro Property Maintenance Code (LMCO Β§156, based on 2018 International Property Maintenance Code) prohibits accumulation of goods, rubbish, or debris visible from the street that creates blight conditions. Garage sale merchandise must be displayed in an organized manner during sale hours and removed from public view by end of each sale day. Unsold items cannot be left at the curb, in the front yard, or on porches between sale days or after the sale concludes. Tables, tents, canopies, and racks must be stored out of sight. Signs must be removed within 24 hours of sale end per LMCO Β§97.20 (right-of-way) and Β§32.273 (historic districts). Louisville Metro Codes & Regulations responds to complaints through MetroCall 311. Persistent violations escalate to the Code Enforcement Board with escalating fines. Small cities within Jefferson County (St. Matthews, Jeffersontown, Shively) enforce their own property maintenance codes.
Items left out after sale: LMCO Β§156 property maintenance citation $50-$200, escalating to $500 for repeat offenses. Signs not removed within 24 hours: LMCO Β§97.20 fine $50-$100. Habitual blight: Code Enforcement Board hearing with compounding fines.
