Livonia allows residential garage sales but limits frequency, duration, and signage. Sales cannot block sidewalks or offer commercial inventory.
Under the Livonia Zoning and Nuisance chapters, a residential garage, yard, or estate sale is allowed on private property up to 3 times per calendar year per household, with each sale lasting no more than 3 consecutive days. Sales may operate only between sunrise and sunset. Items offered must be household goods belonging to the resident, not new retail merchandise purchased for resale, which would constitute unpermitted commercial activity in a residential zone. Merchandise, tables, and parking cannot block sidewalks, handicap ramps, fire hydrants, or the vision triangle at corner lots. Sellers are responsible for removing all signs, tables, and unsold items within 24 hours of the end of the sale; leaving goods at the curb is considered illegal dumping. Neighborhood or subdivision-wide sales sponsored through a homeowners association follow the same per-household limit. Violations generate a notice, followed by a municipal civil infraction if not corrected.
