Mahwah does not require a permit to hold a garage sale, but enforces strict signage rules limiting signs to the property where the sale occurs and prohibiting placement on trees, fences, rocks, or intersections.
Mahwah Township does not require residents to obtain a permit before holding a garage sale at a private residence. However, sign placement is regulated to prevent visual clutter and damage to public property. Garage sale signs may only be posted at the property where the sale is being conducted. Signs are prohibited on trees, rocks, fences, utility poles, or at any intersection pointing toward the sale or address. Signs placed in the public right-of-way or on Township property may be removed and discarded by the Township.
Posting garage sale signs in prohibited locations such as intersections, trees, or fences not at the host property may result in sign removal by the Township and possible summonses for repeat or extensive offenders.
