Unincorporated San Mateo County franchise haulers (Recology San Mateo County, GreenWaste, South San Francisco Scavenger) service different areas. Bins must be stored out of public view except on collection day and retrieved by end of collection day.
San Mateo County contracts with franchise waste haulers through the South Bayside Waste Management Authority (SBWMA/RethinkWaste) and other JPAs. Recology San Mateo County serves most unincorporated areas; Coastside served by Recology of the Coast. Three-bin service required: garbage (gray/black), recycling (blue), and organics/compost (green) per SB 1383 statewide organics mandate. Bins must be stored out of public view from the street between collection days β inside garage, side yard behind fence, or equivalent screening. Bins may be placed at curb no earlier than 6 PM the evening before collection and must be removed by end of collection day. Lids must close completely; overflowing bins not collected. Bulky item pickup available 2x per year for most customers. Commercial dumpsters require screening per Zoning Regulations. Illegal dumping and unauthorized dumpster use prohibited under Ordinance Code Chapter 4.64.
Bins left out: warning then $50-$100 citation. Overflow/improper sorting: hauler may refuse service or charge contamination fee. Illegal dumping under Ord Code Ch. 4.64: $500-$10,000, potential misdemeanor. Organics non-compliance under SB 1383: escalating penalties starting 2024.
