Alhambra prohibits overgrown vegetation, dead or brown lawns, and the absence of healthful ground cover under its Real Property Nuisances code. The City warns that high grass and dead lawns create blighted conditions and can result in a Code Enforcement violation.
The City of Alhambra treats unmaintained vegetation as a property-maintenance and blight problem under its own Municipal Code Chapter 6.26, not Los Angeles County's. The City's Home & Property Maintenance guidance states that "Overgrown vegetation that detracts from the appearance of the home and the neighborhood is not permitted," and warns that residents who let a lawn "become dry and brown, and subsequently die" are at risk of a Code Enforcement violation, describing high grass and dead lawns as conditions that "contribute to blighted conditions and create a nuisance." The prohibited nuisance conditions in Chapter 6.26 include dead, decayed, diseased, or hazardous weeds, ground cover, and other vegetation, or the absence of healthful vegetation, as well as a lack of landscaping or approved ground cover required by the Zoning Code. Visible front and side yards are required to be mowed, landscaped, and otherwise maintained to the satisfaction of the Community Development Director. No specific maximum grass-height measurement (e.g., a stated number of inches) was found published in the City's online materials; the standard is framed qualitatively around overgrowth, dead lawns, and neighborhood appearance rather than a numeric height. Yard waste and grass trimmings go in the green organics cart.
Overgrown or dead vegetation can prompt a Code Enforcement notice to abate; persistent violations of Chapter 6.26 are misdemeanors under Sec. 1.12.010, and the City may abate and recover costs.
