Alhambra's own Real Property Nuisances code (Chapter 6.26) prohibits deteriorated, unsafe, and blighted property conditions citywide. The Code Enforcement Division investigates exterior maintenance, overgrown vegetation, dead lawns, junk accumulation, and inoperable vehicles in public view as public nuisances.
The City of Alhambra enforces blight under its own Municipal Code Chapter 6.26, "Real Property Nuisances," not Los Angeles County's code. The City states it "passed and enhanced" this nuisance code to strengthen its ability to minimize deteriorated and unsafe conditions. Under the City's prohibited public nuisance conditions, it is unlawful for any owner, lessee, or occupant to allow conditions including unsafe, substandard, or dangerous structures (as defined by the Uniform Housing Code and Los Angeles County Building/Residential Codes); dead, decayed, diseased, or hazardous trees and vegetation, or the absence of healthful vegetation; lack of landscaping or approved ground cover in yard areas as required by the Zoning Code; and vegetation overhanging public sidewalks, alleys, or streets so as to obstruct people or vehicles. The City's Home & Property Maintenance guidance directs residents to store trash containers out of public view, move inoperable vehicles out of public view, and not allow overgrown vegetation "that detracts from the appearance of the home and the neighborhood." Visible front and side yards must be mowed, landscaped, and maintained to the satisfaction of the Community Development Director. Violations are handled by the Code Enforcement Division (626-570-3231).
Code Enforcement investigates and issues notices to abate. Maintaining a public nuisance under Chapter 6.26 is a misdemeanor offense punishable under Municipal Code Section 1.12.010; the City may also abate nuisances and recover abatement costs against the property.
