In unincorporated Sacramento County, overgrown vegetation is regulated both as a property-maintenance nuisance and as a fire hazard. The County's Code Enforcement guidance describes a nuisance condition where vegetation is completely dead and over 12 inches tall covering more than 50% of the front or side yard visible from any street, and where weeds exceed 12 inches over 50% of the yard. The County cites Sacramento County Code 16.18.401(X) and (Y) and 16.23.010 for these landscaping and vegetation standards, and notes that dead or diseased trees and weeds may not constitute fire hazards or harbor rodents. Separately, the Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District runs a seasonal weed abatement program: during the dry-season months of May through November, district personnel inspect properties for weeds, grass, vines, and other growth capable of ignition. For residential properties, weeds must be cut to no more than one inch in height, and all cuttings must be removed. Inspections are conducted from public view; district personnel will not climb or look over fences. Property owners who fail an inspection receive a Notice to Abate, after which additional enforcement steps follow until the hazard is abated. Report overgrown vegetation to County Code Enforcement at (916) 875-5656 or, for fire-hazard weeds, to the fire district.
A Notice to Abate is issued for non-compliant fire-hazard weeds; continued failure leads to abatement at the owner's expense. Dead-vegetation nuisances can be cited and abated by Code Enforcement with administrative penalties.
