Isleton allows most common fence materials including wood, vinyl, chain link, metal panel, and masonry. The Historic District encourages traditional materials visible from Main Street, and chain link in front yards is discouraged.
Standard fence materials permitted in Isleton include wood (board, picket, and board-on-board), vinyl, PVC, chain link, wrought iron, ornamental metal, and masonry including brick, stone, and stucco-over-block. Delta-climate considerations favor rot-resistant woods like redwood and cedar and pressure-treated posts because of high water tables. Fabric screening materials such as windscreen cloth are allowed temporarily during plant establishment but not as permanent finish. The Main Street Historic District encourages period-appropriate picket, board, or ornamental iron on street-facing elevations; chain link, corrugated metal, and pallet fencing on front yards are strongly discouraged and may be denied under design review. Barbed wire and electrified fencing are generally restricted in residential zones (see barbed-wire-electric). All fences must be maintained in good repair and may not lean into the right-of-way or rely on levee infrastructure for support.
Dilapidated or unsafe fencing can be cited as a nuisance with fines starting at 100 dollars plus a repair or removal order. Historic District projects that use disallowed materials may be ordered to replace the fence at owner expense.
