Galt allows a wide range of fence materials including wood, vinyl, masonry, wrought iron, and chain link, with chain link typically discouraged in front yards. Materials must be durable and maintained; deteriorated fences can be declared a nuisance.
The Galt Municipal Code permits most common residential fencing materials: wood (dogear, board-on-board, tongue-and-groove), vinyl, stucco or masonry walls, wrought iron or tubular steel, composite, and chain link. Chain link in front yards is typically discouraged or limited by zoning design standards in favor of more finished materials. Barbed wire, razor wire, and electric fencing are generally prohibited in standard residential zones but allowed on Agricultural (AG) and industrial parcels subject to setbacks and warning signs, consistent with California Penal Code 597t and agricultural fencing norms. Materials must be constructed and maintained in a reasonably durable condition: leaning, rotting, broken, or graffiti-tagged fences can be declared a public nuisance and abated at the owner's cost. Solar radiation, salt, and reflectivity standards do not typically apply in Galt, but the city does apply general design review for fences visible from arterial streets such as Lincoln Way or C Street in downtown. HOAs can impose stricter material standards than the city, subject to state solar and drought-tolerant landscaping protections.
