Suffolk County restaurants are inspected by SCDHS under NY State Sanitary Code Subpart 14-1. Unlike NYC, Suffolk does not post letter grades; inspection reports are public via the SCDHS food service portal.
The Suffolk County Department of Health Services Office of Food Protection inspects roughly 8,000 permitted food service establishments under New York State Sanitary Code Subpart 14-1. Inspections occur once or twice per year based on risk classification. Violations are categorized as critical or general; critical violations require immediate correction or re-inspection. Suffolk has not adopted a letter-grade placard system like New York City. Inspection results are searchable on the SCDHS website. Permits are required before opening; mobile food vendors also need annual SCDHS permits separate from town vending licenses.
Operating without a permit, critical violations uncorrected at re-inspection, or refusal of entry can trigger fines, permit suspension, and closure orders by SCDHS.
