Since 2010 every NYC food service establishment must post an inspection letter grade in the window. DOHMH inspectors score under Health Code Title 24 Article 81. Grade A is twelve points or fewer; B is thirteen to twenty-seven; C is twenty-eight or more.
NYC Health Code Article 81 governs restaurant sanitation and inspections. Following the 2010 Letter Grade rule, DOHMH inspectors score each unannounced visit on a point scale where lower is better. Twelve or fewer points earns an A; thirteen to twenty-seven a B; twenty-eight or more a C. Restaurants scoring above the A threshold receive a Grade Pending placard while they appeal at the Health Tribunal, which usually issues a final grade within thirty days. The grade card must be posted in a window or door visible from the sidewalk. Inspections cover food temperature, vermin, employee hygiene, and food source. Repeat C grades can lead to closure.
Critical violations carry fines from two hundred to two thousand dollars per item. Failing to post the grade is a separate violation. Imminent health hazards bring immediate closure orders, and chronic non-compliance can result in permit revocation and shutdown.
