Lincoln residents may drop off used home-generated sharps at LLCHD and several pharmacy partners. Loose syringes are prohibited from curbside trash and recycling under Nebraska solid waste rules.
LLCHD operates a household sharps disposal program at its Environmental Health office and partners with pharmacies and clinics that accept properly contained sharps. Residents must use FDA-cleared sharps containers or rigid puncture-resistant containers (such as a sealed laundry detergent bottle) and never place loose needles in curbside trash or recycling. Commercial generators including tattoo studios and clinics must use a regulated medical waste hauler under Nebraska Department of Environment and Energy Title 132. Improper disposal endangers sanitation workers and is treated as illegal dumping under city ordinance.
Placing loose syringes in trash, recycling, or public spaces can lead to illegal dumping citations and disposal cost recovery.
