Wichita does not operate a needle exchange. Used sharps must be placed in rigid puncture-resistant containers and disposed through pharmacy take-back, household hazardous waste events, or mail-back kits. Kansas law restricts public syringe-service programs.
Kansas remains one of a small number of states without statutory authorization for syringe service programs, and Wichita does not run a city needle exchange. Residents managing diabetes or other home injection therapies are directed to use FDA-cleared sharps containers and bring them to participating pharmacies, the Sedgwick County Household Hazardous Waste facility on North Hillside, or use mail-back disposal kits. Loose syringes in household trash or curbside recycling are prohibited under Wichita solid waste rules and create hazards for sanitation workers. Found needles in parks or on sidewalks should be reported to Wichita 311 for safe collection.
Improper disposal of sharps in regular trash or recycling can trigger solid waste violations and fines. Bloodborne pathogen exposure of sanitation workers may result in additional civil liability.
