Huntsville does not impose night caps or annual rental day limits on short-term rentals. Operators may rent year-round subject to business license and tax compliance.
Unlike cities such as New Orleans or Nashville, Huntsville does not cap the number of nights an STR may be rented in a calendar year. Operators may rent 365 nights/year so long as they hold a current business license under Huntsville Code Chapter 10, collect and remit the 9% city lodging tax plus 5% Alabama state lodging tax (Ala. Code Sec. 40-26-1), and comply with IPMC occupancy limits and Chapter 16 noise rules. There is also no minimum-stay requirement and no non-owner-occupied distinction, so investor-owned rentals are lawful citywide. Zoning-based limits may still apply: some planned unit developments near Redstone Arsenal and Research Park prohibit rentals under 30 days via recorded CC&Rs, which Alabama courts enforce as private contract rights.
No violation for exceeding a night cap (none exists). Operating without a business license or unpaid lodging tax: fines up to $500 per day under Huntsville Code Sec. 1-8, plus Alabama Department of Revenue interest and penalties.
