Operators must register with the Pinellas County Tax Collector through TouristExpress, collect the tax from guests, and remit monthly even when no rent is received. Combined with the 6% state sales tax and 1% local option surtax, the total tax burden on short-term rental stays in Pinellas reaches 13%. Platforms may collect and remit, but operators remain responsible.
Failure to register, collect, or remit triggers penalties of 10% per month up to 50%, plus interest, plus possible criminal referral. Liens may attach to the property and the Certificate of Use may be denied at renewal.
