The county sets no sign rule in unincorporated areas. In the City of Galveston, signs stapled to trees, utility poles, or trash receptacles are prohibited, so garage-sale signs must stay on private property with the owner's permission, not in the right-of-way.
Texas counties cannot zone, so unincorporated Galveston County has no garage-sale-sign ordinance. In the City of Galveston, LDR Sec. 5.301.D prohibits signs attached to trees, utility poles, trash receptacles, or any unapproved supporting structure, and Sec. 5.406 bans new off-premise (directional) signs, which is how most garage-sale signs are used. Temporary on-site signs are allowed under Sec. 5.420. Place garage-sale signs on your own lot; remove them promptly after the sale. League City and Texas City have similar prohibitions.
Signs posted on utility poles, trees, or in the right-of-way may be removed by the city and can carry code-enforcement fines; off-premise directional signs are not permitted.
