Amplified music rules in Galveston County, TX — also called sound permit, PA system, or live music ordinances — set decibel limits, time-of-day restrictions, and when permits are required.
Galveston County sets no amplified-sound rule. In the City of Galveston it is unlawful to operate a loudspeaker or amplifier without a city-manager permit; outdoor commercial amplification requires one. League City requires a police-chief permit for outdoor amplification.
Because the county cannot zone or license entertainment, amplified music in unincorporated Galveston County is governed only by the state disorderly-conduct statute. Cities require permits. Galveston Code Sec. 24-5 makes it unlawful to operate a loudspeaker or amplifier without a city-manager permit and requires legally operating businesses to obtain a loudspeaker permit for any outdoor amplified performance; the fee is $25 per single day ($50 multi-day), and the Sec. 24-2 decibel caps still apply. League City Code Sec. 42-38 requires a $25 police-chief permit, valid one 14-hour period between 8:00 a.m. and 10:00 p.m., applied for five working days ahead.
Operating amplification without the required permit, or above the decibel caps, is prosecuted as a noise violation: a Class C misdemeanor in Galveston, and a $100-$1,000 (repeat $200-$2,000) fine per day in League City.
