Garage sale signs are allowed on the sale property without a permit but cannot be placed in the public right-of-way, on utility poles, or on traffic signs. Signs must be removed within 24 hours after the sale ends.
The Chesapeake sign ordinance treats garage sale signs as temporary residential signs. They may be placed on the property holding the sale and, with written permission, on adjacent private property. Placement on the public right-of-way, street medians, traffic control devices, utility poles, trees, or within the visibility triangle at intersections is prohibited. City Public Works and Code Compliance routinely remove illegally placed signs, and repeat offenders can receive civil penalties. Signs should be no larger than 6 square feet and should not obstruct sight lines or pedestrian passage. Removal within 24 hours of the sale end is required; signs left up become abandoned and subject to immediate removal.
Sign in public right-of-way: removal by city, no notice required. Repeated violations: civil penalty up to 100 dollars per sign.
