Metro Code 17.32 limits garage sale signs to 6 sq ft on private property with owner permission. Signs prohibited in public right-of-way, on utility poles, and on Metro street signs. Must be removed within 24 hours of sale end.
Metro Sign Code (17.32) treats garage and yard sale signs as temporary non-commercial signs. Maximum size 6 sq ft, maximum height 4 feet. Signs allowed only on the property where the sale is held and on other private property with the owner's written permission. Signs prohibited in the Metro right-of-way, on utility poles, on traffic-control devices, on Metro street signs, and on trees. Most directional signs get removed weekly by Metro Public Works and Tennessee Valley Authority/NES cleanup crews. Signs may be posted no earlier than 48 hours before sale and must come down within 24 hours of sale completion. Small neighborhood/multi-family sales generally treated the same.
Signs on utility poles or Metro signs: removal by Metro; $25-$50 per sign fine. Signs left after sale: Metro Codes citation $25 per day. Signs on TDOT right-of-way: state citation possible.
