Louisville Metro permits residential holiday decorations without a permit. LDC Chapter 8 exempts seasonal and decorative displays, though safety, sight-triangle, and LMCO Chapter 91 noise rules still apply after 11 p.m.
Louisville Metro imposes no permit or duration caps on residential holiday displays. LDC Chapter 8 sign rules expressly exempt seasonal holiday decorations on residential property. Displays must not obstruct sidewalks (LMCO 97.10), block required sight triangles at driveways and intersections (LDC 8.2.7), or create fire hazards. Inflatable decorations must be anchored against wind and not block egress. Electrical displays must use outdoor-rated UL-listed equipment per the 2017 National Electrical Code (as amended by the 2018 Kentucky Residential Code). Music and projection displays are subject to LMCO Chapter 91 noise limits β amplified sound audible at the property line must cease between 11 p.m. and 7 a.m. Roof-mounted displays should not damage structures or violate LMCO 156 property-maintenance. HOAs in subdivisions such as Prospect, Glenview, and Lake Forest may impose stricter time windows through CC&Rs.
Sidewalk obstruction: notice to remove. Electrical hazard: Louisville Division of Fire may order immediate removal. Noise after 11 p.m.: LMCO 91.99 citation and $50β$500 fine. HOA violations: private deed-restriction enforcement. Sight-triangle hazard: immediate correction required.
