Michigan law gives consumers a three-business-day right to cancel home solicitation sales over $25. Sellers must provide written notice of this right at the time of sale.
The Michigan Home Solicitation Sales Act, MCL 445.111 et seq., applies to door-to-door sales of goods or services costing $25 or more. Sellers must furnish a written contract with a clear notice of the buyer's right to cancel within three business days. Sellers cannot collect non-refundable deposits or begin work during the cancellation period. The act applies statewide and supplements local solicitor permit ordinances; local rules cannot reduce these consumer protections.
Failure to provide cancellation notice voids the contract and permits buyer cancellation at any time. Violations are also unfair trade practices under MCL 445.903, with civil penalties up to $25,000 per violation.
