New Jersey Exotic and Potentially Dangerous Species Permits

Under N.J.S.A. 23:2A-1 et seq. and N.J.A.C. 7:25-4, the Division of Fish and Wildlife regulates possession of potentially dangerous species statewide. Categories include big cats, primates, venomous reptiles, bears, and many other species, which generally cannot be kept as personal pets. A permit from the Division is required to possess listed species, and applicants must demonstrate qualifications, secure caging, and educational or scientific purpose. These rules apply uniformly across all municipalities.

Possession without a permit is a disorderly persons offense punishable by fines up to $1,000 and seizure of the animal; ongoing violations may carry per-day penalties.
