Passaic County sets no exotic-pet rule. New Jersey regulates exotic and wild animals statewide: a state permit from the Division of Fish and Wildlife is required to keep 'potentially dangerous species' under N.J.A.C. 7:25-4.
New Jersey has some of the strictest exotic-animal laws in the nation. Under N.J.A.C. 7:25-4, the Division of Fish and Wildlife requires an individual permit to possess 'potentially dangerous species' including primates, big cats, venomous reptiles, bears, and many others. Many species may not be kept as pets at all. This is a statewide regime, so it applies uniformly across Passaic County; the county itself issues no exotic-pet permits. Some municipalities add further local prohibitions. Before acquiring any exotic animal, verify eligibility and apply for the required state permit directly with the Division of Fish and Wildlife.
Keeping a regulated species without a state permit is enforced by NJ Division of Fish and Wildlife conservation officers; penalties include seizure of the animal and fines.
