New York Bans Feeding Deer and Bears Statewide

DEC regulations at 6 NYCRR Part 186 prohibit the intentional feeding of wild white-tailed deer and moose, and 6 NYCRR 187.1 prohibits intentionally feeding black bears. Indirect feeding through unsecured garbage or bird feeders that attract bears or deer becomes unlawful once DEC issues a written warning to the person responsible. ECL 11-0505 separately bars placing material to attract deer within 300 feet of a public highway. The prohibitions apply statewide and override any contrary local practice.

Continued wildlife feeding after a written warning carries fines up to 250 dollars per offense, with each day a separate violation, plus potential ECL ticket and DEC seizure of attractants.
