Huntington, NY Animal Ordinances: Wildlife Feeding (2026)

Article VII, Deer Management, was added to Chapter 78 (Animals) on October 6, 2015 by Local Law No. 44-2015. Section 78-41 lists the only deer-control methods the town permits: commercially-approved deer fencing (razor wire, barbed wire, chicken wire, chain link, cloth, canvas and electrically-charged fencing are all barred from use in it), planting of non-deer-friendly vegetation, deterrents such as pepper-based repellent sprays, motion-triggered lights or sprinklers, and coyote effigies, and bow hunting of deer under Chapters 109 and 159 of the Town Code. Section 78-42 then draws the line the other way: no person may engage in, or encourage, the feeding of deer, full stop, with no exception carved out for corn, salt licks, hay or supplemental feed stations.

The provision is a purely local measure enacted by the Town Board under its Chapter 78 authority; it exists independently of, and is enforced separately from, the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation's deer and hunting regulations. Enforcement runs through the Town's Bureau of Administrative Adjudication as well as criminal prosecution, and the Town Attorney also holds standing to seek civil penalties and injunctive relief under Section 78-50 for ongoing violations.
