Huntington, NY Animal Ordinances: Coyote Management (2026)

Article VII, Deer Management, was added to Chapter 78 (Animals) on October 6, 2015 by Local Law No. 44-2015 to control the town's deer population without a cull. Section 78-41(A) permits four categories of action: installing commercially-approved deer fencing, so long as razor wire, barbed wire, chicken wire, chain links, cloth, canvas or electrically-charged mechanisms are not used as or part of it (that fencing-material limit was amended August 11, 2021 by Local Law No. 39-2021); planting non-deer-friendly vegetation; using deterrent tactics such as pepper-based repellent sprays on foliage, motion-detector or motion-triggered lights and sprinklers, and displaying coyote effigies; and bow hunting of deer carried out in accordance with Chapters 109 and 159 of the Town Code.

The section frames these as the permitted toolkit for residents dealing with deer pressure on their property, coyote effigies included as a recognized visual deterrent rather than an actual predator-management program. The companion feeding ban in § 78-42 works alongside this section: residents may deter deer with effigies, fencing, plantings and lights, but may not draw deer in with food.
