Huntington, NY Animal Ordinances: Chickens & Livestock (2026)

Town Code § 78-25(A), in Article IV of Chapter 78, bans keeping chickens or ducks in a manner that creates a nuisance or hazard to public health, comfort, or safety. Section 78-25(B)(1) caps the total number of chickens and ducks, in any combination, at eight per premises. Pens, coops or houses must meet the same setback and side-yard requirements that apply to household pet enclosures under § 198-13(B)(4), be cleaned daily and kept sanitary, and store refuse and feed in covered metal containers. A 2018 amendment, § 78-25(B)(5), set a minimum of two square feet of floor space per bird, and coops must be screened from view of surrounding residences and streets by a fence or shrubs unless already hidden by their location.

Birds must stay confined to the property at all times, and any eggs or birds produced are strictly for the household's own use, not resale. Section 78-25(B)(9) flatly bars roosters. Section 78-26 treats these coops as accessory structures requiring all necessary building permits. The same article separately caps pigeon-keeping at 50 birds per premises with its own sanitation and screening rules under § 78-24, showing the Town regulates each type of backyard fowl with its own numeric ceiling rather than one blanket livestock rule.
