Huntington, NY Parking Rules: EV Charging (2026)

Section TC3-3(A) of the Traffic Code lets the Town Board carve out parking spaces on public streets and in Town-owned municipal lots exclusively for electric vehicles, subject to fees, time limits and occupancy rules the Board sets and can amend. Where a meter would normally apply, subsection (11) overrides the standard per-hour meter rate: EV charging fees are calculated per kilowatt-hour of electricity drawn, plus an applicable surcharge, in addition to the base parking-space fee the Board sets. Subsection (12) separately bars any vehicle from occupying a marked PEV or HPEV charging station unless it is actually plugged in and charging, so gas-powered cars and idle EVs cannot use the space as ordinary parking.

These spaces sit within Schedule "J", "L" or "Q" locations referenced in § TC3-3(A), the same schedules that list metered zones, handicapped spaces and loading zones, and the Department of Public Safety administers meters and pay stations under § TC3-5. A vehicle occupying a charging space in violation of this section is treated like any other parking violation under the Code: it can be ticketed through the Traffic Violations Bureau established under Chapter TC7, and if it is left in place, it is subject to removal by the Department of Public Safety under § TC6-2(C), which authorizes towing of any vehicle parked in violation of a Code parking restriction.
