Huntington, NY Trash & Recycling: Holiday Pickup Schedule (2026)

Huntington prints its holiday collection changes in the Town's 2026 Trash Pickup & Recycling Calendar. The recycling rule, § 117-23(B), names the same calendar: "Collection days shall be designated as per the annual Trash and Recycling Calendar mailed to residential dwellings and published on the Town of Huntington website." That section also provides for recyclables collection once each week "except on weeks containing a holiday, at the discretion of the Director".

Thanksgiving and Christmas are postponed, not cancelled. In the November grid, Thursday, November 26 is marked TOWN HALL CLOSED and NO PICKUP, Friday, November 27 reads HOLIDAY COLLECTION FOR THURSDAY ROUTES, and the Saturday box reads HOLIDAY COLLECTION FOR FRIDAY ROUTES. In the December grid, Thursday, December 24 is marked TOWN HALL CLOSED but also TRASH PICKUP IS SCHEDULED, Friday, December 25 is NO PICKUP, and Saturday, December 26 reads HOLIDAY COLLECTION FOR FRIDAY ROUTES. New Year's Day follows the Christmas pattern: NO PICKUP on Friday, January 1, 2027, and HOLIDAY COLLECTION FOR FRIDAY ROUTES on Saturday, January 2.

Five holidays are cancelled outright: Presidents' Day, Memorial Day, Juneteenth, Labor Day and Election Day. The Town's web page says "This collection is not being rescheduled, instead residents will be permitted to place out double the amount of cans or bags of household trash on their next collection day." Election Day, Tuesday, November 3, 2026, belongs to that group: the November grid prints NO PICKUP in its Tuesday column and DOUBLE TRASH PICKUP FOR TUESDAY/FRIDAY ROUTES in the Friday column of the same week.

Section 117-21(A)(3), as amended by L.L. No. 47-2020, is the code rule behind the double day. A property whose collection day is cancelled due to a scheduled holiday can put out no more than twelve receptacles or bags of Household Garbage on the next scheduled trash collection day, against the six allowed for any one collection under § 117-21(A)(2). Residential Yard Waste and Bulk Items are excluded from the count, and § 117-21(A)(1) still bars curb placement earlier than 6:00 p.m. the day before collection.

Yard waste follows its own rule in the holiday months. The calendar says: "Due to the heavy volume of yard waste set out between November 1 and December 31, your yard waste day will vary." It asks residents to put yard waste out on Sunday evenings and says collection can come any day from Monday through Saturday.
