Huntington, NY Parking Rules: Driveway Rules (2026)

Town Code § 156-23 provides that, except as designated, no part of any required front yard other than the driveway or garage may be used to park or store motor vehicles on residentially-zoned or residentially-utilized property, whether or not the lot is improved by a building, and the rule extends to vacant lots. 'Front yard' is defined as the area between the street right-of-way and the front line setback projected to the side lot lines, including all driveways and garages located in that area. Within that front yard, § 156-23(A) allows no more than 50% coverage by parked or stored vehicles in the R-5, R-7, R-10 and R-15 zoning districts, while § 156-23(B) cuts that to 25% in the larger-lot R-20, R-40 and R-80 districts.

Section 156-23(C) separately bars parking or storing any motor vehicle over or within eight feet of a septic tank or cesspool, a safety measure tied to Long Island's reliance on on-site septic systems. The section, added in 2008, does not override the Town's separate junk-vehicle storage rules in Chapter 156, Article IV, which remain fully in effect alongside these percentage limits.
