Lewisville, TX Swimming Pools & Spas: Above-Ground Pools (2026)

Lewisville regulates above-ground pools under the same building code and Texas Health and Safety Code Chapter 757 provisions that apply to in-ground pools. Any above-ground pool capable of holding water 18 inches or deeper requires a building permit from the Inspections Division at (972) 219-3480. The pool must be enclosed by a barrier at least 48 inches high. Above-ground pools with non-climbable walls at least 48 inches tall may use the pool wall itself as the barrier, provided the access ladder or steps are removable, lockable, or equipped with a self-closing, self-latching gate. If the pool wall is less than 48 inches, a separate fence meeting barrier standards must surround the pool. Electrical connections must comply with the National Electrical Code including GFCI protection. Above-ground pools must be placed in compliance with zoning setback requirements for accessory structures. They cannot be placed in front yards or required side setbacks. Pools must not obstruct drainage easements. The pool must be structurally adequate for the site and water must be maintained to prevent mosquito habitat. Inflatable pools under 18 inches deep are generally exempt from permit requirements but must still be emptied when not in use to prevent standing water.
