Every outdoor pool, hot tub, or spa in Ottawa County must be enclosed by a barrier at least 48 inches tall, with no more than a 2-inch bottom gap and openings that will not pass a 4-inch sphere. This is a statewide Michigan Residential Code rule.
Michigan adopts the 2015 International Swimming Pool and Spa Code through the Michigan Residential Code, and it applies in every Ottawa County city and township. Section 305.2 requires a barrier around any in-ground, on-ground, or above-ground pool, hot tub, or spa. The top must be at least 48 inches above grade, the bottom gap no more than 2 inches, and chain-link mesh openings no larger than 1 3/4 inches. Georgetown Charter Township independently states 'fencing is required' for any pool 24 inches or deeper. A separate fence permit is usually required from your local building department.
A pool cannot be filled with water until the barrier is complete and inspected. A non-compliant or missing barrier is a code violation subject to correction orders and municipal enforcement.
