Every outdoor residential pool in St. Joseph County must sit behind a barrier at least 48 inches high under the 2020 Indiana Residential Code, Appendix G, Section AG105.2. Openings in that barrier cannot pass a 4-inch sphere.
The 2020 Indiana Residential Code, adopted by 675 IAC 14-4.4 and enforced by the St. Joseph County Building Department, governs pool barriers for one- and two-family homes. Section AG105.2 sets the barrier at not less than 48 inches above grade measured on the side facing away from the pool, holds the gap under the barrier to 2 inches, and requires that openings reject a 4-inch-diameter sphere. Vertical fence members must be spaced no more than 1 and three-quarter inches apart where horizontal rails sit under 45 inches. The barrier is verified at inspection before the pool is used.
A barrier under 48 inches, or one with openings that pass a 4-inch sphere, fails inspection. The county withholds approval and use of the pool until the barrier complies.
